Math 30-3 Demographic

What motivation are people seeing in this demographic of student? I've been having success with students working in groups, but the motivation falls apart when they're working individually.

I'm finding that the success of the groups masks the inabilities of the individuals.

What experiences are others finding? By the way, I'm blogging a bit at http://glenreesor.ca

I've found success with group work as well.

I try to work with a continuum of group work to individual work.  Students will solve problems at the board in random groups, then use small whiteboards to practice together and then try a question on their own.  I find that after having some opportunities to practice with support they are more confident to try on their own.

Thanks for the question and I'll have to check out your blog.

That's the conclusion I'm coming to...that group work is good, but there also needs to be individual work. Thanks for the confirmation.
