1.4 Question

I had a question posed by a student from the workbook. #5 on Page 17. I have done many questions similar to this one using the Principle of Inclusion and Exclusion with success, but for some reason I can't get this answer. Can anyone help me.

Your question confirms my suspicion that there is an error with/in the question. I had worked it out using both an algebraic approach and the Principle of Inclusion and Exclusion. The penultimate step both led to the equation: -2x = -28, thus x = 14. However, this value is invalid since that would lead to a nonsensical answer of -6 students having attended only the session on Vietnam.

Speaking of error in the answer key, I believe the answer to question 2b on p. 16 should be 54, not 49 as given. Do you agree?

I have told my students to change the total number of students to 81. When you do this the answer at the back of the book is correct.

And yes 2b. on page 16 should be an answer of 54 not 49. I actually caught that one.
