I received this question in an email and am sharing it with you.

" we are making it through the first unit, I was quite surprised that my students were having trouble with the notation in the
function operations. As soon as it was written as a sum, diff, pro or quotient they were fine but the (f+g)(x) just about drove them crazy. Any suggestions other than a poster or.....???

If you have any suggestions or unique solutions please post a reply and share your thoughts.

This is a copy of a response I received :

All I would suggest is to write these in both forms until comfort level increases.
Ie. (f-g)x = f(x) - g(x)
